Seattle City Light has partnered with Woodland Park Zoo to repurpose branches from maintaining power lines. The clippings, which would normally be discarded, are now used as food for some of the zoo's animals. Anabel Roza, the utility's Vegetation Management & Wildfire Mitigation Manager, shared details about these efforts, according to the Seattle City Light.
Seattle City Light's gardening crews regularly trim branches to maintain safety around power lines and reduce fire risks. Instead of discarding the clippings, the utility is repurposing them to feed local wildlife, benefiting various animals like birds and other creatures, as reported by the Seattle City Light.
City Light has started giving tree clippings from transmission line pruning and weeds from substations to Woodland Park Zoo. "Instead of composting or discarding these clippings, we give them to the zoo to feed their animals," said Roza. This helps the utility dispose of organic waste, while the zoo receives a regular supply of fresh food for its animals, as stated by the Seattle City Light.
