Sevier County, in partnership with the City of Sevierville, has found a potential path forward for the redevelopment of its Smokies Stadium and surrounding area. The two bodies inked a Memorandum of Understanding with The Outlet Resource Group (TORG) on Tuesday, with hopes to revitalize the local landmark and its adjacent parking lot.
At stake is the future of a central community hub, a space locals flock to for sports and entertainment. The Sevierville Industrial Development Board had put out a call for proposals last September, seeking developers ready to breathe new life into the stadium precinct. They received three visions, but TORG’s proposal was unique, offering a promise to the community: the stadium stays. As Sevier County announced, TORG's willingness to preserve the stadium stood out as a preferred sustainable approach.
Under the MOU, the clock has started ticking for TORG, which now has until late August to present its complete redevelopment plans. During this 120-day exclusive negotiation window, the County and the City are committed to working solely with TORG to hash out the finer points of what could be a major local transformation.
The implications of this partnership could resonate deeply with the Sevierville community. TORG's redevelopment plan, assuming it aligns with the City's vision and needs, could secure Smokies Stadium's place in the heart of the city for generations to come, while simultaneously providing new amenities. The success of such ventures lies in the details, of course, which, for now, the community patiently awaits.
