Tragedy struck on the U.S. 60 freeway in Mesa yesterday morning when a single-vehicle crash claimed the life of one person. FOX 10 Phoenix reports that the incident occurred just before 3 a.m. along the eastbound lanes near Power Road.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the driver, alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the hospital after veering across the gore point and rolling down the off-ramp embankment several times. Shedding light on the minimal details available, DPS stated, "For unknown reasons, traffic unit one veered to the right across the gore point for the Power Rd exit, corrected to the left, and rolled down the off-ramp embankment several times," as per a report by FOX 10 Phoenix.

As a result of the accident, the eastbound lanes of U.S. 60 were closed for hours, causing significant disruptions to the early morning traffic. They were later reopened around 7 a.m., while the westbound traffic, gliding by unaffected by the mayhem on the opposite side, continued to flow normally.

The identity of the driver involved has yet to be released pending the ongoing investigation. AZ Family notes that the crash only involved the one vehicle, which, after veering and correcting, resulted in the fatal rollover. They reported that the freeway was reopened around 6:45 a.m.

Local authorities continue to look into the reasons behind the crash, and details will be provided as they become known. In the meantime, both reports urge anyone with photos or videos of the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation.
