The City of South Fulton's efforts to reduce gun violence took a practical turn over the weekend with the successful execution of the fourth annual Community Gun Buyback event. In a three-hour span at the Butner Road Shopping Center, citizens were encouraged to safely surrender unneeded firearms, with the reassurance that they would face no inquiries as to the weapons' origins or their reasons for submitting them. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the event saw the collection of 37 guns, which were exchanged for gift cards worth up to $75 based on the firearm's condition.
The local police have since voiced that, although the event has passed, residents still have the opportunity to turn in their firearms at any local police precinct, and they might be able to still receive a gift card of equivalent value. "Participants received gift cards worth up to $75, based on the type and condition of the weapon," reported FOX 5 Atlanta on the aftermath of the event and ongoing initiatives.
South Fulton City Councilmember Carmalitha Gumbs sponsored the buyback event, a collaborative effort that brought community leaders and law enforcement together to tackle the issue of unwanted guns. Meanwhile, 11Alive highlighted that a broader count of the guns collected, which included those previously confiscated in unrelated incidents, exceeded 75 in total. The collected firearms were subsequently destroyed, chiming with the overarching goal to permanently remove these potential instruments of harm from the streets.
Expanding the reach beyond the single-day event, the South Fulton Police Department has urged community members to continue safely disposing of firearms they no longer desire to keep. "Unwanted firearms can be brought to any local precinct, where individuals may still qualify for a $75 gift card," a statement obtained by 11Alive indicated, offering a standing invitation for participation and emphasizing the sustained effort to curb gun-related incidents in the area.
