U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced that between March 28 and April 3, the Southern District of Texas filed 225 border security-related cases. These cases cover a range of offenses, including illegal reentry, human smuggling, assault on a federal officer, and firearms trafficking, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Vicente Garcia Jr. and Jose Alexis Baeza-Combaluzier have been arrested in connection with a human smuggling operation that led to two fatalities, including a 14-year-old child. Baeza-Combaluzier attempted to evade law enforcement by driving into a canal, resulting in further loss of life. Both face life imprisonment or even the death penalty if convicted. In another tragic case, an undocumented migrant died shortly after being guided across the border wall. Immigration authorities have also flagged two alleged MS-13 gang members charged with illegal reentry, including Nicolas Alberto Hernandez-Lopez, who had been deported for sexual assault, and Cesar Humberto Leal-Garcia, who was arrested after assaulting two Border Patrol agents, with a history of multiple illegal reentries, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Pedro Cardiel Rodriguez, a Mexican national, is accused of attempting to smuggle a 9 mm pistol and ammunition across the Brownsville Gateway International Bridge into Mexico. Cristina Amezcua Valencia faces charges for identity theft after fraudulently applying for a U.S. passport. These cases are part of Operation Take Back America, a national initiative aimed at dismantling cartels and transnational crime syndicates. The Southern District of Texas is working with federal, state, and local law enforcement to address these crimes, as stated by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
