The streets of Southwest became the stage for a tragedy on Wednesday afternoon when a vehicle collided with a pedestrian, claiming the life of a local woman. The Metropolitan Police Department has since been piecing together the unsettling sequence of events that unfolded at around 3:30 p.m. at 6th Street and M Street.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department's initial reports detailed on their website, officers from the First District arrived on the scene to find 74-year-old Kathy Turner unconscious after the collision; despite the swift response from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Turner's injuries proved fatal. MPD's investigation sheds light on how the vehicle struck Turner in the crosswalk, an area supposedly offering safe passage for those on foot, but here it became a place of irreversible consequence.
The driver involved remained at the location of the incident, which is now under scrutiny by Major Crash Detectives as they seek to understand how a routine turn led to such a grave outcome. While the investigation continues, the police have not yet released further details about the driver or what might have contributed to this devastating impact that ended a life so abruptly.
