St. Charles Parish is embracing outdoor activities with a new project aimed at improving its levee system. Officials launched the levee bench project today to install amenities for residents and visitors using the levee pathways. As reported by the local government website, this addition aims to further St. Charles Parish's commitment to creating safe and enjoyable spaces.
According to a statement obtained by the St. Charles Parish Government, Parish President Matthew Jewell shared his enthusiasm for the project. "The addition of levee benches on both the East and West Bank is another step forward in continuing our commitment to creating safe, accessible, and enjoyable spaces for the residents of St. Charles Parish," said Jewell. The project consists of nine benches set to be installed on the East Bank and six on the West Bank, complementing existing facilities.
Locations on the East Bank will include Montz, Norco, New Sarpy, Destrehan, and St. Rose, while the West Bank will see additions in Ama, Luling, Hahnville, and Killona. Each spot will not only feature benches but also bike racks and trash receptacles to promote a more active community lifestyle.
Director of Parks and Recreation, Duane Foret, underscored the project's goal in a press release. "By adding levee benches, bike racks, and trash receptacles along both the East and West Bank, we are creating inviting spaces that encourage residents to get outside, stay active, and enjoy the beauty of our community," stated Foret. The Regency Consulting Group has been handed the $165,000 contract, with funds fully covered through Parks and Recreation. Construction is slated to finish by mid-summer 2025, barring any delays from the unpredictable river conditions.
