Mark your calendars, history buffs and patriots. On April 18 from 5-6:30 p.m., downtown St. Charles will host its commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution. The St. Charles County Historical Society is opening its doors at 101 South Main Street for the community to honor and remember the events that transpired on April 18, 1775. According to the St. Charles County announcement, the event is free, with light refreshments and drinks to be served.

Joan Koechig, President of the St. Charles County Historical Society, shared her hopes, saying, "I hope it will be the same as the bicentennial was in 1976." She noted the importance of unity in our current times, adding, "We’re in a divisive time between people and we need to forget our differences and remember those who fought so we can live the free lives we have today." Remembering, of course, comes with its celebrations; there will be a reading of "Paul Revere’s Ride" and the lighting of two lanterns, which will evoke the historic signal from 1775 alerting patriots of the British approach, as detailed by St. Charles County.

St. Charles County is plenty rich in Revolutionary history. There are dozens of known descendants of American Revolutionary War veterans that will be joining the festivities, along with approximately 180 members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and about 110 members of the Sons of the American Revolution, Koechig says. Attendees are even invited to dress up in period costumes to get into the spirit of the times.

The St. Charles event is just the beginning. Similar gatherings to honor America's semiquincentennial will be popping up across the country that same night, uniting citizens in commemoration. Amid the vibrancy of historic remembrance, walking the streets where patriots once dreamt of liberty, these celebrations invite us to take a step back into the past, while sipping on refreshments, to reflect on the nation's legacy of freedom and the diverse threads that weave the American narrative together.
