Business owners in the South Shore area are on high alert after a series of burglaries targeted local establishments. According to a crime alert published by Chicago Police, these incidents have been taking place within the 3rd (Grand Crossing) District, with thieves forcibly entering businesses using pry tools and making off with stolen goods.
Reportedly occurring on the 2100 block of E. 71st St., the burglaries transpired under the shroud of darkness. On April 9 at around 3:50 am, April 14 between 1:27 am and 5:44 am, and once more on April 17 at about 6:20 am, the perpetrators, wearing gym shoes and ski caps, fled the scene on foot with pilfered property in hand. The assailants have been described as one to two Black males, aged between 20 to 30, draped in black or grey long-sleeved shirts and black gym shoes.
The Chicago Police advice to the public is unequivocal: maintain vigilance, report suspicious activities without delay, and should you encounter an assailant, stay composed. Citing unique identifying features, such as scars or a limp, could be invaluable to law enforcement. However, they sternly advise against pursuing those fleeing the scene; instead, one should feed this information to the police promptly.
Further tips offered by authorities include the conservation of video surveillance, should it capture the incident, and soliciting contact information from any potential witnesses. "If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information," stressed the police. When feasible, victims are encouraged to dial 9-1-1 immediately and wait for the arrival of the authorities at the scene of the crime.
