
In a late night chase through the residential streets of Shrewsbury, MA, local police apprehended a suspect later identified as Gary Goyette, age 30, of Worcester MA. The pursuit culminated on Monday, stemming from a call to the Shrewsbury Police Department reporting a suspicious individual peering into cars and lurking in backyards near Gifford Drive.
According to information released by the Shrewsbury Police Department on their Facebook page, initial attempts to locate the man were unsuccessful, prompting a broader search aided by the SPD Drone Unit. Officer Carroll eventually spotted Goyette near the corner of Rt. 140 and Merriam Avenue, which led to a foot chase involving multiple officers. Lieutenant Kevin Caviston was credited with apprehending the suspect as he attempted to breach a fence providing resistance, but was swiftly taken into custody.
Searches conducted during the arrest revealed a collection of what were suspected to be stolen items in Goyette's possession, including several cell phones, debit cards, and other articles with names not matching his own. Goyette now faces charges of Receiving Stolen Property over $1200, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon (knife), Trespassing, and Resisting Arrest.
Additionally, the arrest brought to light Goyette's history of legal issues with two outstanding warrants from Worcester. The first warrant included serious charges such as Armed Assault to Murder, firearm usage in a felony, carrying a loaded firearm and ammunition without permits, intimidation of a witness, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The second was for assault and battery, the police department has detailed Goyette's previous encounters with the law and underscored the collaborative work of officers Bartosik, Coates, Lyons, Sheehan, and Sgt Faucher in the incident resolution.
