A suspect is now in custody after a scary break-in and assault on a woman in the Southeast Portland area. The Portland Police Bureau reported the incident occurred on Tuesday night when officers were first called to Southeast 30th Avenue and Southeast Schiller Street due to a man seen climbing fences and balconies. Despite an initial search, authorities were unable to locate the individual at that time.

The situation escalated early Wednesday morning at around 4:45 a.m. when a separate call reported a burglary at an apartment, situated in the 4800 block of Southeast 30th Avenue, where a woman was assaulted by an intruder while she was asleep, according to the police department. Another resident managed to chase the suspect out of the apartment, and with the assistance of a UAS drone and a K9 unit, the police were successful in apprehending him soon after.

The name of the suspect will be released following their booking into jail. The victim was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment for injuries sustained during the assault. The case has been handed over to the detectives of the PPB’s Sex Crimes Unit. They have indicated that, as of now, they do not believe there are additional victims related to this case.

The police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Detective Wendi Hamm can be reached at [email protected] for tips, and individuals should reference case number 25-90575 when providing any information. Considering the nature of this grave incident, the community remains on alert while police conduct further investigations to ensure the suspect did not target other individuals.
