An MBTA commuter train and a white SUV were involved in a collision this afternoon in Abington, Massachusetts, causing both traffic and rail service disruptions. According to NBC10 Boston, the incident occurred near Centre Avenue, where the road runs adjacent to the Abington train station. The road was subsequently closed from Plymouth to Progress streets while police and emergency services attended to the scene.
Severe damage to the SUV was visible, with the vehicle appearing to have come to rest against a chain-link fence by the tracks. The MBTA indicated that there was a "road vehicle on the right of way," leading to cancellations and delays on the Commuter Rail Kingston Line. "❌ Kingston Line Train 1026 (12:45 pm from Kingston) is cancelled today due to a road vehicle on the right of way," the MBTA Commuter Rail announced on Twitter as per NBC10 Boston.
WCVB provided aerial footage from Sky5, showing the aftermath of the collision, including what appeared to be a sheet covering a victim adjacent to the SUV. The MBTA disclosed that Train 1017, the 11:25 a.m. train from South Station, was held up 15 to 25 minutes behind schedule because of a road vehicle on the right of way.
While specifics of what led up to the crash and the condition of any individuals involved have not been officially released, Abington Police have asked motorists to avoid the area and follow instructions issued by public safety personnel. The investigation into how precisely the vehicle came to be in a position to so disastrously intersect with the train is ongoing. Authorities, along with the operator of the MBTA Commuter Rail, were reached for comments, but additional details were scarce as they continued to assess the event's circumstances.
