The City of Tampa is moving forward with its objective to stimulate growth in the northern region of its downtown area, an initiative aimed at intensifying urban development through the creation of housing and enhancing connectivity. As reported by the City of Tampa's official website, the city, along with the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), has released a Request for Proposal (RFP) focusing on four parcels of land, which include the former Army-Navy Surplus Market site acquired by the city in December 2020.

Spanning approximately four acres, this underemployed swath of downtown holds the promise of a mixed-use development, mandated to encompass a minimum of 750 residential units within its design, with half being affordable housing options. The Ashley Drive on-ramp to I-275, which borders these properties, if agreed upon, could see an overhaul that would significantly improve safe crossings and the flow of people between the new development and its neighboring communities. Despite being adjacent to entertainment hotspots, the redesign is necessary to bridge gaps in the area's urban fabric.

Mayor Jane Castor expressed enthusiasm about the project, highlighting the collaborative effort between state and local entities. "This long-term planning and teamwork involving state and local partners are the special ingredients that build strong and thriving cities," Mayor Castor said in a statement obtained by the City of Tampa's official website. "We are excited to begin the process of adding much-needed affordable housing to this great location in our urban core and cannot wait for the other redevelopment projects in this area that will make it more walkable and accessible for all those living, working, and visiting Tampa's beautiful downtown."

Beyond revitalizing North Downtown Tampa, this development is in company with other key Tampa projects like Gasworx in Ybor City and the West Tampa Green Spine Cycle Track, falling under the banner of Transforming Tampa's Tomorrow. These initiatives share a unified vision of energizing the city's heart. The initial stage of considering proposals for the N Tampa Street property will culminate on June 13, whereupon city officials are anticipated to delve into the process of discerning and endorsing a finalist for the project.
