Tampa General Hospital is preparing to send whole blood to severe trauma scenes by drone, a move that could bring transfusions to Hillsborough County patients before they reach the emergency room. The proposed system is designed for the moments when a few minutes can separate a survivable injury from a fatal one.
The hospital says it would be the first in the nation to deploy a drone program specifically for pre-hospital blood delivery, according to WTSP. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue would operate the drones, with 911 dispatchers activating the service alongside emergency responders when a call involves severe blood loss.
Blood Could Be Airborne Before Ambulance Arrival
Tampa General is Tampa Bay's only Level I trauma center, according to the hospital, and its emergency transport program already uses whole blood to help stabilize trauma patients. Whole blood can replace lost volume while also supporting clotting, giving first responders another tool during the dangerous stretch between an injury and hospital treatment.
The idea is part of a broader push to make blood available outside hospitals, where logistics and distance can make pre-hospital transfusions difficult. EMS1 recently reported that emergency-medicine experts are examining drones as a way to make whole blood more accessible, particularly for systems that cannot keep large supplies on every ambulance.
The proposed Tampa-area service would cover about 70 square miles, with drones staged at HCFR Station 9 in the Falkenburg and Sabal Park area and Station 37 in Riverview. Officials are targeting average delivery times of less than three minutes, and first responders would begin transfusions at the scene before transporting patients to Tampa General, WTSP reported.
County Approval Still Stands Between The Drones And Takeoff
Hillsborough County commissioners must approve the service before it can launch. The commission is expected to consider the proposal in September, with the drone operation currently scheduled to begin in October 2026 if the plan receives the necessary approval.
OneBlood would provide the blood logistics infrastructure, while Archer First Response Systems would supply the drone logistics system. Tampa General is also partnering with the Florida Center for Emergency Medical Services and the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, creating a project that combines the hospital's trauma operation with local fire-rescue response and academic evaluation.
Tampa General Has Already Tested Emergency Drone Deliveries
This would not be Tampa General's first experiment with sending lifesaving medical equipment by air. In 2024, the hospital partnered with Manatee County and Archer First Response Systems on an emergency drone program carrying an AED, Narcan and a tourniquet to eligible 911 callers, with delivery times expected to be roughly two minutes, according to a Tampa General announcement.
The new proposal would move that concept from delivering equipment to delivering the treatment itself. It also gives Tampa General a sharper role in Tampa Bay's growing medical-drone race, following BayCare's prescription drones, which are aimed at medications, lab samples and other supplies rather than emergency transfusions at injury scenes.
