A shooting incident in the vicinity of Overton High School resulted in a teenage girl sustaining critical injuries and prompted a lockdown at the educational institution. As reported by FOX13 Memphis, the Memphis Police Department informed that the altercation involving the girl and others at Willow Road Park yesterday morning escalated when a man drove up in a dark-colored SUV and opened fire, leaving the scene littered with two shell casings.
Officials from Memphis-Shelby County Schools stated the injured party was formerly associated with Overton High being expelled in 2023. She was not a current student at the time of the event, an important distinction clarified in the wake of the lockdown in a statement detailed by Action News 5. The lockdown has since been lifted and was implemented as a cautionary measure while emergency services, including the Memphis Fire Department and Memphis Police Department, responded to the crisis.
During a press conference, MPD officer Phillip Penny confirmed the victim's identity as a teenage girl, as mentioned by Local Memphis. A school official reinforced the message by contacting parents and ensuring that the lockdown at Overton High School was a preventive move, emphasizing the isolated nature of the incident and the proximity of security to the scene for swift action.
Memphis-Shelby County Schools later released a statement confirming the victim was transported to Regional One Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The situation at hand involved a male suspect dressed in all-black clothing, and the school authority is in full cooperation with law enforcement as they continue to investigate the existence of additional suspects involved in the incident.
