An incident unfolded last night when a 17-year-old male lost his life in a rollover crash on the East Freeway, Channelview area. According to Sgt. Villacorta of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division, the accident occurred just before midnight near the San Jacinto River and Monmouth Drive exit, as reported by KHOU.
The vehicle, a 1999 Toyota Tacoma, was westbound when it departed its lane, entered an exit ramp, then proceeded to roll onto its left side. The car then left the roadway to the north, and came to rest upside down in a small body of water. As per KHOU, the young passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, showing "no signs of life," Sgt. Villacorta noted.
The driver, who managed to escape and assisted in removing his passenger from the vehicle, did not sustain serious injuries. After the incident, he walked nearly a mile to a gas station to call for help. The deputies carried out sobriety tests on the driver, determining he showed no signs of impairment. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities particularly interested in whether speed was a contributing factor to the incident, FOX 26 Houston reports.
Names of both the driver, and the deceased have not been made public. The authorities have also not disclosed how the driver and the passenger were acquainted. The case continues to be actively investigated as officials piece together the circumstances surrounding this fatal event.
