The Tennessee Department of Education just rolled out a vital component for families looking to participate in the state's universal school choice program. The Education Freedom Scholarship (EFS) Program student application checklist is now online, prepping parents for the application window that opens in May. Considering the stakes, Governor Bill Lee expressed his optimism, stating, "For the first time, Tennessee parents in all 95 counties will have the opportunity to enroll their child in the school of their choosing, regardless of income level or ZIP code."
Tennesseeans are eager for greater control over their children's education, and Gov. Lee noted nearly 200 schools are prepped to open their doors to scholarship recipients. The Department of Education, helmed by Commissioner Lizzette Reynolds, is spearheading the effort to firm up resources for applicants. "At the department, we are hard at work to provide essential resources for families, so they are prepared and know what to expect once the application window opens later this spring," said Reynolds, knowing the impact the new process holds for eager families.
Fresh off the legislative press, the Tennessee Education Freedom Act became state law on February 12, 2025, throwing the doors wide open for universal school choice in the Volunteer State. This legislative move set the tone for what followed on March 20, when the State Board of Education rolled out emergency rules for the EFS Program during a specially called meeting. These rules are temporarily guiding the program's initial implementation for 180 days, pending the development of lasting regulations.
Interest is expected to be high, and families are being encouraged to stay informed, with the Tennessee Department of Education facilitating a flow of regular updates. They are inviting folks to sign up for newsletters and stay tuned to the growing list of schools jumping on board. Intent has been signaled by 198 schools to date, showcasing a strong start.
