A tragic incident occurred this past Friday night when a 10-year-old boy was fatally struck by a car in Jefferson Parish. The Louisiana State Police reported that the boy, identified as Kevin Madrid from Terrytown, was crossing Behrman Highway near Nile Street with a group of children when the collision happened at about 8:30 p.m. The children were noted to not be using a designated crosswalk at the time of the accident. According to WWLTV, Madrid was among a group that attempted to cross the eastbound lane and entered directly into the path of a 2012 BMW 750i.
The driver of the BMW, who remained on the scene and was reportedly wearing a seatbelt, showed no signs of impairment. A breath sample voluntarily provided by the driver showed a result under the legal limit, as per WDSU. State Police further mentioned that none of the other children present were injured during the incident. Immediate efforts were made to transport Madrid to a local hospital, but he unfortunately succumbed to severe injuries and was declared deceased.
The aftermath has left a community to grapple solemnly with the fragility of life and the importance of pedestrian safety. "For reasons still under investigation, Madrid and the other children entered the eastbound lane of LA 428, in an area without a designated crosswalk, and crossed directly in front of the BMW's path," an LSP spokesman said in a statement obtained by FOX 8 Live. This has prompted reminders from the State Police about the vital need to always utilize designated crosswalks when traversing streets.
In response to this tragedy, local authorities have been earnest to remind citizens of the measures they should take to ensure pedestrian safety. This includes wearing high-visibility clothing and being extra cautious when near roadways, especially in areas where crosswalks are not present. Investigations into the incident are ongoing as officials and the community alike seek to find ways to prevent such tragedies in the future.
