Yesterday, the State of Texas executed Moises Sandoval Mendoza, who was convicted of the 2004 murder of Rachelle O’Neil Tolleson. Mendoza had confessed to abducting, sexually assaulting, and killing the 20-year-old mother. He was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m. in Huntsville, Texas, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
According to a statement from the Texas Attorney General’s Office, Mendoza took Tolleson from her home, committed acts of violence, and later attempted to hide her body by burning it and placing it in a creek.
Attorney General Ken Paxton stated that the execution marked the enforcement of justice in the case. He noted that twenty years had passed since the murder, and the legal process had now concluded. This case closes after nearly two decades of legal proceedings. The execution also comes during continued national discussions about the use of the death penalty.
