In an active approach to tackle a pervasive issue, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared April 2025 Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. This initiative comes as a reminder to both acknowledge the struggles endured by survivors of such violence and to underscore the statewide efforts in combatting sexual crimes, as stated in an announcement from the Office of the Texas Governor.
"Every person is worthy of respect and protection, especially from acts of sexual violence," Governor Abbott said, emphasizing the Texas government's commitment to protect its citizens by ensuring perpetrators are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, Abbott's comments reflect an acknowledgement of the resilience of survivors—looking to honor their strength during the month-long observance. Advocates and officials are called to unite in furthering awareness while striving for a safer future for the community, as stated by the Office of the Texas Governor.
The proclamation also highlights the ongoing work of the Governor’s Sexual Assault Survivors’ Task Force, founded in 2019, which unites survivors, professionals, and advocates to enhance the response and care for adults and children affected by sexual violence in Texas. According to Texas Association Against Sexual Assault CEO Rose Luna, the state’s actions are commendable for their significant support and resources provided to survivors across Texas, as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor.
As part of the awareness initiative, Texans are encouraged to show solidarity with survivors by participating in events, using resources from the SASTF, and even by engaging with the hashtag #SAAPM2025 on social media to demonstrate their support throughout April, besides these efforts individuals can find additional resources for survivors on the SASTF website which offers a wide range of support mechanisms for those in need, as per the Office of the Texas Governor.
