Last Saturday night, a tragic incident unfolded on the highways of Baltimore County, where three individuals lost their lives in a horrific vehicle accident. As reported by Maryland State Police, the incident initially began with a routine traffic stop and rapidly escalated into a dire scene only minutes later.
The event took an unexpected turn about 11:05 p.m. when a Maryland State Police trooper from the Traffic Incident Management Division attempted a traffic stop on a Jeep Wrangler on the inner loop of I-695 at Greenspring Avenue. For reasons yet to be made clear, the vehicle sped away, causing a pursuit that the trooper promptly decided not to follow. After turning off his emergency lights and reentering traffic, the trooper came upon the accident shortly thereafter, fully engulfed in flames, located on the grass area off the I-695 ramp leading to southbound I-83.
According to the preliminary investigation, it appears that the Jeep attempted to take the exit ramp to southbound I-83 when it tragically lost control. The Jeep struck an embankment before colliding with a tree, ultimately catching fire. When emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, they pronounced the driver and two passengers dead.
The collision caused major disruptions, with road closures lasting about four hours as the Maryland Department of Transportation handled the scene. The Office of State Fire Marshal and Baltimore County Police also assisted. The Maryland State Police CRASH Team leads the investigation into what caused the fatal crash.
