Three suspects have been apprehended and are facing charges after a Houston Police Department officer fired his weapon during an attempted robbery arrest last week. According to a news release from the City of Houston, the incident occurred around 11:50 p.m. on April 10, at 6200 Lyons Avenue.
Ronny Leonardo Hernandez, 18, the driver of the vehicle involved, has been charged with aggravated assault of a public servant, and will appear in court in the 209th State District Court. Cristian Rolando Gutierrez Bonilla, 19, and Victor Jesus Rauda Lopez, 20, both passengers, are facing charges of criminal trespass in Harris County Criminal Courts #3 and #5, respectively. Despite the officer firing at the suspects' vehicle, fortunately, no injuries were reported, as reported by the City of Houston.
Officer O. Martin, who joined the police in June 2024 and now works with the Northeast Patrol Division, was involved in the shooting. While searching for a car linked to an earlier robbery, officers found the suspect vehicle in a parking lot. When they tried to stop it, the car sped toward the patrol cars, putting officers in danger. Officer Martin, with no clear way to escape, fired at the car in self-defense. His shots missed, and the suspects sped off, starting a high-speed chase, as stated by the City of Houston.
After a car chase ended in the 7600 block of Wallisville Road due to tire damage, police arrested Hernandez, Gutierrez Bonilla, and Rauda Lopez without any trouble. Three guns were found—one in the car and two tossed during the chase, as per the City of Houston. The cases are being handled by Houston Police Department's Special Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs, while the robbery part is being investigated by the Robbery Division.
