Clinton Township, Michigan, was disrupted yesterday by a shooting that injured three teens. Around 8:45 a.m., law enforcement responded to the scene at the Clemens Court apartment complex on Lotus Drive, where two teens were found with gunshot wounds, and a third had been grazed by a bullet, as reported by CBS News Detroit. Both injured parties were promptly transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation, which has yet to lead to any arrests, is unfolding with the police having identified a person of interest, informed by a community narrative that suggests a long-standing feud may have been the catalyst for the violence, "Kids out here fighting, minor kids out here with guns," Simona Thacker, a resident whose grandsons were the teens shot, told WXYZ. Thacker expressed a sentiment felt widely among the community, that a greater collective effort is needed to improve safety and awareness in the area.
Details about what directly precipitated the shooting are still scarce, but residents have indicated that such incidents are not new to this complex. Law enforcement focused part of their investigation on a Chevrolet Impala, which was observed at the scene and later towed. A call to action has gone out from community members, hoping that measures will be taken to prevent further such occurrences, as mentioned by ClickOnDetroit.
The local community has expressed concerns regarding security, highlighting the proximity of the police station as an ironic contrast to the safety they feel, "This is kind of like the second incident where something has happened back to back and we got three little kids," Amanda Standberry, a resident of the apartment complex for two years, explained in a WXYZ interview. She emphasized that the presence of young children in the complex accentuates the urgency of heightened security measures.
Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the shooting to step forward and contact the Clinton Township Police Department at 586-493-7800.
