An unfortunate series of events unfolded on the 5 Freeway in Anaheim this past Saturday evening, resulting in the tragic loss of two individuals, including a young toddler, and the hospitalization of several others. The incident occurred northbound near Magnolia Avenue as the weekend crowd likely began their ventures.
The California Highway Patrol reported to KTLA that the accident involved a white Chevrolet SUV and a dark-colored Ford SUV around 7:10 p.m. The Chevy is said to have rolled multiple times, coming to rest on an embankment, while the Ford was found facing the wrong direction, indicating the severe nature of the collision. The life of an elderly man and that of a toddler were claimed in this devastating turn of events.
Investigators are considering impairment as a potential factor, which could provide some explanation for the violent clash of metal and ensuing chaos. According to NBC Los Angeles, five people were inside the Ford vehicle at the time of the crash, with three survivors' conditions remaining undisclosed. The driver of the Chevy SUV survived with major injuries and was admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Following the collision, traffic was significantly impacted, resulting in a full closure of the northbound 5 Freeway as officials cleared the wreckage and diverted vehicles to the westbound 91. Overhead footage by SkyCal showed the extent of vehicular damage as seen by CBS News Los Angeles, with a white SUV against the pole of a street sign and a sedan with a smashed front end and guardrail collision evidence.
