On a regular Sunday afternoon, the streets of Austin bore witness to a tragedy that occurred at the intersection of S. Capital TX HWY SB and Lost Creek Blvd. According to an official release from the Austin Police Department, the incident, which took place on April 6, involved two vehicles and resulted in one fatality, identifying the deceased as Mendi Leggett.
As per the Austin Police report, the crash happened at approximately 2:34 p.m., immediately summoning APD officers to the scene. They found Leggett pronounced deceased on arrival, while two others, who had been riding in their car, sustained injuries that were deemed non-life-threatening by first responders and were swiftly taken to a nearby hospital for care. Driving the other vehicle, which remained unharmed, the driver showed no signs of impairment and, along with the passenger, fully cooperated with the investigation that followed the crash.
This distressing event has marked Austin's 23rd fatal crash this year alone, as the city now tallies 27 fatalities. The prior year's count, at this same juncture, stood slightly lower, with 21 fatal crashes bringing about an equal number of deaths.
Investigators continue to unravel the circumstances of this most recent fatality, with efforts being marshaled by the APD's Vehicular Homicide unit.
