Starting next week, major maintenance work is scheduled for US Highway 84 southeast of Pagosa Springs, per the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). The chip seal operations will commence on Monday, April 28, and are set to conclude by the end of the week, impacting a five-mile stretch between Mile Points 11 to 16.
For those planning to travel between Chromo and the junction of US 160, anticipate additional delays, with traffic control measures including full stops, and guided pilot vehicle escorts through the work zone. The expected hold-ups could stretch for up to 15 minutes, and the CDOT makes it clear that following the posted speed limits is not just a suggestion, it's a necessity to prevent damage to your vehicle.
Daytime work will disrupt normal traffic flow from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Motorists will be subjected to alternating one-lane traffic and are required to await a pilot car before joining the flow of traffic from driveways or intersections, according to CDOT. In addition, a speed reduction to 40 MPH will be enforced in the work zone for safety reasons.
As part of navigating through the chip seal projects, drivers are urged by CDOT to slow down, which will help prevent loose stones from causing damage. An increased distance between vehicles is also advised, as it could reduce potential damage from scattered stones.
