This morning, a truck barreled through the Vanderbilt Post Office in Fayette County during a police chase, resulting in significant damage to the government building. According to reports from CBS News, the incident occurred just before 1:45 a.m. on Liberty Street, with the driver evading authorities on foot following the crash.
The force of the impact left the post office structurally compromised, featuring a gaping hole and a widening crack along the building's front. Firefighters on the scene expressed concern over the building's structural integrity, and a building inspector from the federal government was expected to evaluate the premises later in the day. The Vanderbilt Post Office's Postmaster confirmed plans to secure the building and redirect any incoming mail to the nearby Dawson Post Office, about 2 miles away.
Pennsylvania State Police, operating out of the Uniontown barracks, are leading the investigation into the truck crash. As reported by the Post-Gazette, state police have yet to provide an official statement regarding the pursuit or the subsequent collision.
