A standoff at an Everett motel ended with two arrests on Friday, shedding light on the arresting dance between law enforcement protocols and public safety. KING5 reports that a police officer discharged their firearm during the confrontation at the FarWest Motel on Evergreen Way. The resultant situation pushed a man and a woman to barricade themselves inside a room.
Upon officers' arrival around 11:30 a.m., initiated by a disturbance call involving a possible firearm, they were met with the reality of an armed man. Faced with the potentiality of violence, an officer's weapon was fired, although it was noted by KIRO7, police have not confirmed whether any party suffered gunshot wounds during the incident.
Negotiations ensued and less-lethal alternatives were employed to encourage a peaceful solution. According to a statement obtained by KOMO News, "As de-escalation efforts continued, officers utilized less-lethal tools, and the male and female exited the room and were taken into custody without incident." The man, reportedly sustaining minor injuries, received immediate on-scene medical attention before being taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment, while the woman involved was unharmed.
The quick apprehension of the suspect speaks volumes of the tactical acumen and restraint shown by Everett police, who with the partnership of the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team, successfully avoided further escalation.
