A tragic incident unfolded in Channelview when a vehicle with a woman and three children inside plunged into the waters near Market Street and River Haven, close to the Houston Ship Channel, authorities reported. As per the Click2Houston coverage, the event occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. and prompted witnesses to call 911 after observing the vehicle descend into the water.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office confirmed that two children were rescued from the submerged vehicle by a witness who braved the waters, while a 39-year-old woman, and an infant believed to be about 1 year old were found deceased. The children, possibly aged around 5 and 7 years old, were taken to a nearby hospital in good condition, testimony to the heroic efforts of good Samaritans and first responders at the scene. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez indicated investigators are considering the possibility that the driver suffered a medical emergency leading to the unfortunate event, as the vehicle was "not going fast at all," Click2Houston reported. The vehicle had been observed on surveillance footage making intermittent stops and starts prior to the incident.
Following the resolute dive into the murky waves, the witness was able to aid the two struggling children atop the vehicle before it was fully engulfed by the water. "The witness dove in the water and rescued those children," Major Cedric Collier detailed during a subsequent news conference, expressing profound gratitude for the civilian's courageous intervention, as per KHOU.
Maj. Collier also suggested the possibility that the car's windows were aptly down, allowing the children to escape to safety. The video evidence, revealing the vehicle's erratic motion just before the incident, further corroborates the working hypothesis of a health-related crisis at the wheel. "We're assuming the windows were down enough that the kids could escape," Collier said, underscoring the slender threads upon which survival sometimes hangs. The identities of the victims and survivours have yet to be disclosed to the public, as reported by KHOU.
