The Fort Collins Police Department has been thrust into the center of a tragedy following a shooting at the Foothills Mall that left two people dead. The authorities responded to emergency calls at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, as gunfire disrupted the relative peace of a Colorado afternoon. Officers arrived to find two victims, who were quickly transported to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to their injuries, according to the City of Fort Collins.
The mall, along with the attached movie theater, remained closed for the remainder of the evening as police and emergency workers managed the scene, aiding those who were sheltered in place between the parking lot and building where the incident occurred. Assisted by multiple agencies, including the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and Poudre Fire Authority, secured the area. The police made an intensive effort to apprehend the perpetrator, leading to the arrest of a juvenile male whose identity has not been revealed given his age.
In a further development, "Detectives worked through the night on this case and were able to make an arrest," said Assistant Chief Frank Barrett, who leads the FCPS Criminal Investigations Division, as per the City of Fort Collins. The FCPS maintains a readiness for incidents, despite their rarity in the area, committed to city safety. The crime scene was thoroughly processed until its reopening to the public around midnight.
