Two individuals sustained injuries in a severe three-car collision in Skokie, as reported by fire officials on Saturday morning. The accident occurred near Church and Keeler and involved a vehicle rollover, as well as damage to several parked cars, ABC7 detailed.
The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force (NORTAF) Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) completed their investigation at the scene the following morning. The probe was initiated following the crash that happened at around 10:00 p.m., Friday night, in which four vehicles were heavily damaged. The driver suspected of causing the crash may have been driving at approximately 100 mph, ignoring a stop sign, which led to the collision with multiple vehicles, according to a statement obtained by WGN-TV.
Skokie Fire officials reported that at least one individual suffered serious injuries and two people were transported to a hospital for treatment. Their condition was updated to stable, as indicated by Skokie police on Saturday.
Rejimon Jacob, a resident near the crash site, expressed his frustration about the reckless nature of the incident. "It makes me so angry. He was minding his business and now all of a sudden, he’s in a really bad situation," Jacob told WGN-TV. The collision impact was so intense, it caused one parked vehicle to strike his son’s car, further amplifying the property damage.
Fellow Skokie residents painted a picture of turmoil immediately following the impact, which was described as a bomb going off. Benita Kapnick-Cohen, a local, relayed her concern for the safety of families and children in the vicinity, especially with a nearby synagogue celebrating the Sabbath – Shabbat at the time of the crash. "Fortunately, they were coming eastbound and had it been tonight when we don’t finish our dinners until 2:00 in the morning, it could have been extremely devastating," Kapnick-Cohen explained to WGN-TV.
After repeated requests from locals for additional safety measures such as increased enforcement and traffic calming implementations like speed bumps, the neighborhood remains concerned about the frequency of accidents at this crossroads. The ongoing investigation has yet to clarify if the driver responsible for the crash was cited. Skokie police have been contacted for more details on the crash, but have not responded as of publication.
