Tragedy struck the Parkway East yesterday evening as two individuals lost their lives in a wrong-way collision. According to WTAE, state police reported that the crash involved two pickup trucks near the Allegheny County Jail on I-376's westbound lanes. The collision, which occurred when one truck was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes, resulted in the death of one driver at the scene and the subsequent passing of a passenger in the hospital, identified as Sharon Orlofske, 77, of Monroeville.
As further investigations unfold, traffic restrictions following last night's incident have been lifted. The second victim's identity remains undisclosed pending official release by the authorities. Reflected in the headlights of first responders, concerns over such tragic occurrences have sparked discussions, as PennDOT announced a $4.8 million safety project aimed at preventing wrong-way crashes along another stretch of road, detailed in a report by Triblive.
In what has become an unsettling recurrence on this stretch of highway, state police confirmed the involvement of a Chevy Silverado and a Nissan Frontier in the devastating incident, noting the Silverado was traveling in the wrong direction at the time of impact. The two men occupying the Silverado were rushed to the hospital for their injuries. Further details are being gathered by the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialists and Forensic Service Units of the state police, based on information from a media release featured in a CBS News Pittsburgh article.
