Following a violent episode in Pelham, Georgia, investigators have been on the move to piece together a drive-by shooting that left the community reeling. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), two teenagers, aged 16 and 15, are facing charges including aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime after the Saturday night incident.
Details on the events of April 19 emerged after the Pelham Police Department called in the GBI. At approximately 9:40 p.m., gunfire erupted between duplexes on Welch Street, resulting in two minors getting hit, while, two others were shot at but escaped physical harm. These chilling moments unraveled in a place families call home, shaking the foundations of what it means to be safe in one's own neighborhood.
Victims of the unfortunate event received immediate attention. The GBI relayed that one was treated and released at a local hospital, the other sustained minor injuries and was treated on-site. Amidst these quick responses to aid the wounded, the assailants were booked into Michell County Jail and later transferred to a Youth Detention Center, a legal journey that abruptly yanked them from childhood into the cumbersome arms of the justice system.
The minors caught in this legal bind now face a system that they likely do not understand— a system that, details GBI, has placed them at the center of an "active and ongoing" investigation that calls on the community to assist. The public is encouraged to offer any relevant information, encouraged by the potential of anonymity through a hotline, an online tip submission form, or a mobile app dedicated to reporting such incidents.
Looking forward, this case will advance to the Juvenile Court following the investigation and may see the South Georgia Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for prosecution, suggesting a path that could intertwine the futures of these young individuals with verdicts and decrees. The community waits as pieces are put together, hoping for justice and a return to quietness on their streets.
