The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas has recently announced a surge in prosecutions as part of their relentless efforts to bolster security along the southern U.S. border. In total, 237 new cases were filed between April 18-24, involving charges that range from illegal reentry to human smuggling and violence against federal officers, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Of those charged, 124 individuals stand accused of having illegally reentered the United States—most with prior felony convictions, including narcotics, firearms, sexual offenses, and previous immigration violations. Among those is Carlos Verduco-Muniz, who allegedly assaulted a Texas Military Department Specialist during his apprehension near Rio Grande City. Ganjei's office specified that Verduco-Muniz "is a citizen and national of Mexico who was illegally present in the United States at the time of the assault," as stated by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The crackdown also nets individuals charged with first-time illegal entry, with 106 people finding themselves facing these allegations. On the more severe end, five cases address instances of human smuggling, while others pertain to assault of an officer or additional immigration-related crimes. Some noteworthy cases include Jose Roberto Cuadro-Parada, Yobani Garcia-Garcia, and Benito Barrera-Martinez—all previously removed from the U.S., and now facing charges once again after being found near Roma, Texas, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Additional sentences were handed down this week, including a 27-year-old Mexican national sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for assaulting a Border Patrol agent. Moreover, a Honduran man in Houston is set to serve 150 months for armed robbery and shooting the store's employee, as well as for his actions in a separate incident involving a firearm discharge at a minor. The details of these convictions underline the SDTX's efforts to "marshal the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime," as stated in the U.S. Attorney's Office press release.

The Southern District of Texas, covered by Assistant U.S. Attorneys from divisions extending from Houston to Laredo, is one of the nation's busiest districts, representing over nine million people across 43 counties. It's clear the office is rigorously enforcing public safety and border security as their top priority, actively prosecuting individuals involved in a range of illegal activities, from traffic-related manslaughter to international fraud schemes, as part of Operation Take Back America. The initiative has been bringing together federal, state, and local law enforcement entities to execute its mission of augmenting border security and eradicating crime linked to illegal immigration, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
