The late, great Mid-South wrestler, James "Kamala" Harris, is set to be immortalized in the world of professional wrestling with his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame. Known for his larger-than-life persona as the "Ugandan Giant," Kamala became a household name in the 1980s and 1990s, with memorable bouts against industry icons like Hulk Hogan and the Undertaker. The WWE announced his inclusion in the Hall of Fame Class of 2025 as "a long-overdue celebration of a performer who changed the landscape of sports entertainment," as stated by WREG.
Born in Coldwater, Mississippi, Harris' early life was a stark contrast to the glitz and glamor of his wrestling career. Before his rise to fame, he toiled as a truck driver and a sharecropper, laboring in obscurity until the creation of the Kamala character by Memphis wrestling legend Jerry "The King" Lawler catapulted him to stardom. Despite his later years being marred by serious health issues, including the loss of both legs to diabetes, Harris' legacy remains untouched. According to his family's heartfelt statement obtained by FOX13 Memphis, "On behalf of our family, we want to extend our deepest thanks to WWE for the incredible honor of inducting James Harris, known and loved around the world as Kamala 'The Ugandan Giant,' into the WWE Hall of Fame."
The induction ceremony, set to occur on Friday, April 18, aligns with the spectacle of WrestleMania weekend, offering fans a moment of nostalgia and recognition of Harris' contributions to the sport. His widow, Emmer Jean Harris, reflected on his posthumous induction with reverence and gratitude, saying, "Because of you, Kamala’s legacy will forever be etched into the history of professional wrestling," as noted by WREG.
