Union County Government has recognized Wendell Roberts for his quick response in saving a life. While dining with colleagues at a local restaurant on March 5, Roberts, a warehouse supervisor, noticed a fellow patron choking. He immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver, clearing the person’s airway. According to a statement obtained by Union County, the county manager, Brian Matthews, praised Roberts, saying, "Wendell's quick thinking and willingness to help in an emergency is truly commendable."
Roberts is experienced in handling emergencies, with a background as a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and a volunteer firefighter with the Pageland Fire Department in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. His training has prepared him for such critical situations. This incident marks another occasion for Roberts, as he was previously awarded the Lifesaver Award in November 2023 for assisting an employee having a seizure.
Union County's news release details that Roberts, in addition to his county responsibilities, Roberts demonstrates a strong commitment to public service. His ability to remain composed under pressure reflects his dedication and also highlights the role of first responders who are ready to assist in everyday situations.
Roberts was awarded the Lifesaver Award by county management last Wednesday, an honor given to individuals whose actions result in saving a life.
