The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) rocket team, Sun City Summit Rocket Team, has reportedly taken home the top prize at the Lone Star Cup, a prominent Texas rocketry competition. The event, which convened student teams from across the state in a display of aerospace prowess, occurred March 22-23 in Seymour, Texas, according to UTEP.
Competing against notable institutions like Texas Tech University, Texas A&M, and the University of Texas at San Antonio, UTEP's team managed to clinch the victory by building the rocket "Prometheus", which reached an altitude of 6,110 feet, just 10 feet away from its simulated goal. This precision earned them the Barrowman Award, a nod to the rocket's real-world performance mirroring its theoretical projections, as per the team's project manager and UTEP's master’s student in aerospace engineering, Pedro Ferreira Da Silva. Pedro informed the university, "hopefully, our efforts will result in more opportunities such as these for UTEP aerospace and mechanical engineering students," as per UTEP.
UTEP's multidisciplinary rocket team comprises over 100 students from various academic backgrounds, including engineering, science, and business. The program is designed to mirror the academic year, allowing students to effectively plan, design, and construct rockets from fall through spring. They're also educated and trained by faculty and seasoned team members, ensuring an in-depth knowledge transfer and consistency, year after year. A solid proof of this well-executed strategy is the team's performance at the prestigious Spaceport America Cup, where their prior best was 29th place among over 150 collegiate teams from around the globe, UTEP reports.
Guided by Dr. Jaeyoung Cho, an assistant professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering at UTEP and the team's faculty advisor, the Sun City Summit Rocket Team has proven its competence. Dr. Cho believes that organizing a large group across different disciplines is no trivial task, indicating the recent accomplishment is "worthy of celebration." With their eyes set on future challenges, UTEP's rocket team is preparing for the International Rocketry Engineering Competition set for Midland and Saragosa, TX, from June 9-14, which will attract competitors from more than 150 colleges and universities. UTEP aims to maintain its winning streak, the university detailed.
UTEP stands as a beacon for Hispanic academic advancement, being described as America's leading Hispanic-serving university, with 84% of its 25,000-strong student body identifying as Hispanic. Many of these students are first-generation college attendees, and the university prides itself on offering a wide range of degree programs that cater to their diverse demographic within an open-access, research-intensive framework, according to UTEP.
