Valero's official news channel reported that the company conveyed to the California Energy Commission its current plan to idle, restructure, or cease refining activities by April 2026. "We understand the impact that this may have on our employees, business partners, and community, and will continue to work with them through this period," said Lane Riggs, the corporate figurehead for Valero.
Alongside this announcement, Valero acknowledged a hefty impairment charge of $1.1 billion related to these refineries, incorporating a figure for anticipated asset retirement obligations. A significant portion of the charges will be treated as a special item, implying they'll be excluded from adjusted earnings data for the first quarter of 2025. This financial consideration seems ahead to significantly pistol-whip the state's oil refining capacity and the job market. Valero is reckoning with strategic options for its entire California operations spectrum in the broader scheme.
In a Facebook post from the City of Benicia Government, City Manager Mario Giuliani relayed the information to the community, indicating that the city was formally notified of Valero's intentions. Giuliani voiced the city's resolve to seek clarification on the refinery’s future timelines and operational restructurings while keeping residents updated on the potential economic upheaval.
"This is a moment of significant transition for our city and community," Giuliani elaborated. Resilience seems to be the watchword for Benicia, which has "faced tough budget challenges" and worked diligently to strengthen its economic underpinnings in recent years. Moreover, Benicia's Mayor, Steve Young, vowed transparency and collaboration in coping with the prospective changes, asserting that Valero's presence is tightly interwoven with the city's economic fabric, per the City of Benicia Government.
