Drivers in Arizona should plan for a major detour this weekend as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced closures on southbound SR 143. ADOT reports that the section of SR 143 between Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and Interstate 10 will be closed from 10 p.m. tomorrow until 4 a.m. on April 14. The closure is necessary to allow for safe sign installation work.

The closures will affect more than just SR 143. Ramps from Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to southbound SR 143, as well as the westbound Loop 202 off-ramp at Sky Harbor Boulevard, will also be closed during this time. Additionally, the southbound SR 143 on-ramps at Washington Street, Sky Harbor Boulevard, and University Drive will be closed starting at 8 p.m. tomorrow, with re-opening set for 4 a.m. next Monday. Drivers are advised to use detours to navigate around these closures.

Drivers traveling southbound past the closure area are encouraged to follow detour routes. Westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) travelers are advised to use the westbound Loop to eastbound I-10. Eastbound Loop 202 drivers should take the eastbound Loop to southbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway), and then continue to westbound US 60. These detours aim to provide alternative routes for reaching destinations south of the closure.

For travelers heading to the airport, ADOT advises using southbound 44th Street from Loop 202. Construction schedules may be affected by weather or other factors, so motorists are advised to check for updates using TheCurve mobile app or the project website before traveling.

The closures and detours are part of ongoing infrastructure improvement efforts by ADOT. The I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project, outlined in the Maricopa Association of Governments' Regional Transportation Plan and funded by Proposition 400, is intended to reduce travel times on I-10 during peak hours, improve airport access, support ridesharing and transit, and address anticipated future growth in the region.
