West Sacramento is officially ushering in a new era for Westacre Park, with shovels hitting the dirt to commence a sweeping overhaul of the 12-acre community staple. According to a report from the City of West Sacramento, city officials and residents gathered to kick off the groundbreaking ceremony. Kate Smith, the city's Director of Parks & Recreation, underscored the community-oriented vision of the upgrade, asserting that "Every element of this project was shaped with input from the community, for the community."
Speaking on the project's intent to knit the local fabric even tighter, Mayor Martha Guerrero reminisced the park's historic roots and its bright future. "Today’s groundbreaking is not just about infrastructure—it’s about building a stronger, more connected West Sacramento," Guerrero told attendees, as reported by the city's news release. The park is set to feature an array of new amenities, including a splash pad and skate park, hinting at a future where families come together to quickly create memories.
Injecting a personal touch, District 2 Councilmember Quirina Orozco shared insights into the park's familial significance, weaving in the broader theme of community access. "Soon, families will be able to safely walk or bike here from both sides of the freeway thanks to the Sycamore Trail overpass," Orozco highlighted, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to equitable access.
Reportedly, the park's revamp will boast a skate and pump track, a splash pad, and diverse sporting courts, alongside improved soccer fields and updated facilities. The anticipation is set to culminate in mid-2026 when the ribbon-cutting is expected to reveal these new community treasures. The project is buoyed by a hefty $7.8 million from the Proposition 68 Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Grant, with additional funds from local organizations such as Sutter Health and the West Sacramento Rotary Club chipping in to diversify the park’s offerings with a new labyrinth and reflexology path.
