A somber incident unfolded in Houston's Third Ward on Easter Sunday, as a young father was fatally shot, leaving behind a two-month-old child. Jaylon Fox, 19, was identified by his grandfather as the victim of the shooting that took place at the intersection of Rosalie and Brailsport streets. Sergeant Charles Lamont of the Houston Police Homicide Division expressed the sorrow of the day, stating to ABC13, "It's a very unfortunate way to spend Easter. Please, hold onto your loved ones tight."
Lamont detailed that Fox had met up with someone at the location and was reported shot at 3:46 p.m. The circumstances surrounding the incident and the identity of the person he met with are being investigated. A neighborhood resident lamented the frequency of violence and the perceived lack of police response, claiming in an interview with ABC13, "It's always gunshots, but (police) don't come over here and help us. They don't help us because of how we look. We're on our own out here. We're on our own."
Local advocate and Third Ward resident, Ed Pettitt, expressed his frustrations over lack of police presence and communication in a shared email with the new Houston Police Commander, which ABC13 obtained. "Where are the bike patrols? Where are the ATVs we used to see? Why has their presence vanished along with any basic communication from your office? We are beyond tired. Tired of the killings. Tired of the silence. Tired of the complete and utter lack of communication from your office," Pettitt wrote.
Lamont mentioned that detectives intended to spend Sunday evening gathering video evidence and conducting interviews within the neighborhood. "Anybody that has any information, video footage, or was a firsthand eyewitness, please come forward. This could be your loved one behind me right now," he told ABC13. An appeal was made for the public's cooperation, and he assured anonymity for those who wish to come forward with information. Houston Police can be reached at 713-308-3600 and arrangements can be made to meet at an alternative location for those wishing to remain anonymous.
A report from FOX 26 confirmed that the shooting happened in the 3100 block of Rosalie Street, just after 3:30 p.m. The investigation is still ongoing. So far, police haven’t shared any details about the victim, suspects, or what led to the shooting. More information will be released as the investigation continues.
