A high-speed pursuit involving Cuyahoga County deputies ended with a 19-year-old driver in custody after a series of events that left three people injured from a car crash, and a deputy discharging a firearm. The incident occurred last Friday night in the Fairfax neighborhood of Cleveland and has sparked an ongoing investigation.
The chase began around 9:30 p.m. when deputies, aiding the Ohio Investigative Unit, tried to stop the vehicle near East 90th Street and Woodland Avenue. According to WKYC, the young driver refused to stop, precipitating a chase that led to another car being hit at East 85th Street and Cedar Avenue. This resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to three individuals, who were later transported to a local Cleveland hospital.
After the collision, the pursuit continued until the driver abandoned his vehicle at East 70th Street and Central Avenue. At this point, with the driver allegedly carrying a "suspected firearm," a deputy fired his weapon. In a statement obtained by Cleveland19, the Cuyahoga County Press Secretary, Jennifer Ciaccia, confirmed that no injuries were sustained from the gunfire.
The arrested teen, who has not been publicly named, now faces charges of failure to comply with a lawful order, aggravated vehicular assault, and failure to stop after an accident. The deputies noted that while the driver was apprehended, other individuals inside the suspect vehicle weren't arrested. As per the information from FOX8, a gun was ultimately recovered from the vehicle.
