In a situation that reads like a bad case of mistaken identity, a 67-year-old man found himself on the wrong side of the law after a traffic stop went bizarre in Hillsborough County. Glenn Ross, the suspect in question, was arrested on Tuesday when he allegedly attempted to pass himself off as a federal agent during a routine traffic encounter with deputies. This information emerges from a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Facebook post.
Law enforcement officials explained that Ross, driving a vehicle with unauthorized emergency lights and a spotlight, activated red and blue lights upon being pulled over northbound on I-75 and US Highway 301. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, he didn't stop there but presented a fraudulent TSA badge to the deputies, falsely claiming he was a federal officer, despite displaying no evidence of federal employment history. Having activated his emergency lights, the suspect was then arrested and charged with multiple offenses including Unlawful Use of Blue Light, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Impersonating a Public Officer.
Sheriff Chad Chronister took the incident as a serious breach of public trust and law enforcement authenticity. "Impersonating a law enforcement officer creates significant public safety concerns," Chronister stated. "Our office has zero tolerance for those who threaten the integrity of the badge. We will do everything we can to make sure this individual is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," as detailed by Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office encouraged anyone who may have had an encounter with Ross, or suspects they have been a victim of a similar impersonation, to come forward. With the lines of trust between the public and law enforcement being crucial, the office's use of emergency lights was seen as a particularly egregious violation. Concerned individuals are urged to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office non-emergency line at (813) 247-8200 if they believe to have been approached by Ross or have information on similar incidents.
