Travelers traversing the natural expanse of Arizona's high country should brace for a patchwork of construction as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) rolls out a series of paving projects intended to enhance and preserve highway pavement. Announced improvements include stretches along Interstate 40 in regions near Flagstaff and Kingman, with several other undertakings in nearby communities including Prescott, Payson, Tuba City, and Page. ADOT reports implement timings meant to stave off work during weekends and holidays, acknowledging the constraints of seasonal weather that borders the higher elevation work to warmer months.
Navigating northbound towards Kingman, motorists are advised to anticipate lane restrictions and possible delays of up to 15 minutes due to the replacement of 11 miles of pavement on I-40 between Holy Moses Wash and Rattlesnake Wash. This extensive work, commencing this summer, is projected to span an entire year. Similarly, on US 93 south of Wikieup, a 13-mile pavement replacement is set to begin, enveloping mileposts 131 to 144. Scheduled to start this spring, the project expects completion this summer. And with these projects, according to ADOT, drivers should be prepared for minor logistical hiccups.
Further north, close to Flagstaff, later this summer, ADOT will undertake a pavement replacement project on I-40 stretching from Two Guns to Meteor City, from milepost 230 to 240, with a completion horizon set for 2026. In an effort to extend the longevity of roadways near Winslow, to the east of Flagstaff, a sealant application project is scheduled to start as soon as this month on I-40, covering mileposts 240-258, and concluding by early summer.
Other summer paving projects outlined by ADOT include State Route 89A in Prescott Valley, where an overlay will be applied to a 7-mile segment of the highway. Planned to wrap up by early summer, the project has already begun. Going south of Page, a 7-mile expanse of US 89 that skirts between Bitter Springs and Rossman Hill is slated for strategies to improve its pavement surface and incorporate spot repairs as needed with a target to finish in fall 2025.
