An AI-generated impact statement delivered a message from beyond the grave, as Chris Pelkey "spoke" during the sentencing of his killer in a road rage incident from 2021. In an event reported by FOX 10 Phoenix, this marked the first known application of such technology in a United States courtroom for this purpose.
Pelkey's family, led by his sister Stacey Wales and her husband, utilized AI to craft a video of Pelkey, juxtaposing his own words and voice likeness to form an impact statement. Although Horcasitas received a 13-year prison sentence, it is notable that Pelkey's closing statement in the courtroom held weight, stating, "Well, I'm gonna go fishing now. Love you all. See you on the other side."
The unique AI recreation included clips and images, showcasing aspects of Pelkey's humor and character. His AI even remarked on the preciousness of aging. "This is the best I can ever give you of what I would have looked like if I got the chance to grow old," he stated, according to details from an ABC 15 News report.
While the AI video provided a stirring moment in court and elicited profound emotional reactions from both the judge and Pelkey's family, Stacey Wales noted it was imperative to express her brother's sentiments without the color of her own. She aimed to ensure the AI represented what Chris would say if he were here, emphasizing Chris's benevolence and capacity for forgiveness as a cornerstone of his character.
The Arizona Supreme Court is taking a cautious yet enthusiastic stance on the integration of AI technology within the judicial system. Chief Justice Timmer expressed excitement for AI's potential while advocating for a balanced approach. The court has constituted an AI committee to examine best practices and ensure AI's appropriate usage in pursuit of justice, recognizing that "those who use AI—including courts—are responsible for its accuracy," as quoted by ABC 15 News.
