Drivers in Akron, brace yourselves for a smoother ride ahead, but also some summer driving delays. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Simon, a prime contractor, are set to roll up their sleeves on June 2 for a major resurfacing project on Colorado Highway 63. This roadwork will cover an approximate nine-mile stretch between Mile Points 25 and 34, north and south of the Town of Akron, as reported by CDOT.
The project, to the tune of $7.9 million, will not only repave the roads but also include shoulder grading, erosion control, and updated signage. Heather Paddock, CDOT Regional Transportation Director, highlighted the significance of this project for local commerce: "Well-maintained rural highways support the local economy, from farm to town. This project is about keeping those crucial links strong and efficient and investing in the safety of CDOT’s infrastructure to protect travelers," according to CDOT.
If you're planning to use CO 63, expect to see workers and heavy machinery weekdays from morning till dusk, and maybe on the odd Saturday. Prepare to sometimes stop for up to 15 minutes due to single-lane, alternating traffic patterns that will be in place during the daylight hours. Road operation will resume as normal when the sun sets. For more detailed updates or to check current road conditions before your travel, CDOT’s project webpage and COtrip are resources that one should regularly check.
