To tackle youth violence and promote health and well-being among young people, the city of Akron has launched a new grant program aimed at youth-serving organizations. The Sports and Wellness Grants, as announced by Mayor Malik, are designed to support programs that offer sports and wellness activities for Akron's youth. Eligible applicants can now apply for funding to cover expenses like program fees, mental health services, and equipment and safety gear costs.
Available grants range from $500 to $5,000 and cannot be utilized to cover staffing costs. The city has dedicated a total of $100,000 to this initiative, intending not only to furnish Akron's youth with more opportunities but also to actively engage them in sport as a means of violence prevention. "We know that sports participation is a fantastic tool to address a range of larger challenges including public safety," Mayor Malik told Akron Ohio News. He also mentioned that the city has committed to getting at least 64% of young people to play sports by the end of the decade through a partnership with the Aspen Institute’s Project Play.
The Aspen Institute's Children's Bill of Rights in Sports, which Akron has pledged to adopt, underscores the belief that all youth deserve the chance to develop physically and personally through sports. This move is considered a stepping stone towards building a healthier community and is complemented by the city's partnership with Project Play.
Denico Buckley-Knight, Akron's Youth Opportunity Strategist, shared insights into the city's aspirations for fostering a sports and wellness ecosystem. "Akron has such an incredible legacy around sports and athletics," Buckley-Knight told Akron Ohio News. Emphasizing the city's historic connection with athletics, he expressed optimism for the numerous benefits, which include obesity prevention and the promotion of social inclusivity.
Organizations interested in applying for the grants have until May 31 at 11:59 pm to submit their applications either via email to Youth Opportunity Strategist Denico Buckley-Knight or in person at the City Hall. More information about the grant program and the application process is available at the City of Akron's official website.
