In anticipation of the holiday, the City of Akron's Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG), in conjunction with Huntington Bank, is slated to host a Memorial Day commemoration. The event, slated from 11:30 am to 1 pm on Friday, May 23, will be at Charles Goodyear Park located in the Summit County Courthouse Courtyard. The program boasts performances by the Ellet CLC ROTC Drill Team, a wreath-laying ceremony, and speechifying from a lineup of officials. Akronites should note that in foul weather, the gathering will move indoors to the Ocasek Building at 72 S. Broadway.
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik, amid planning for the upcoming holiday, took time to articulate the deep significance of the day. “Memorial Day is set aside to remember with gratitude all who served and gave their lives to defend our democracy and our freedoms. Our community and our nation owe these heroes a debt that can never be repaid," Malike declared in a statement. "This weekend, may we all take time to remember our U.S. military personnel who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service of our country," he told the City of Akron in a recently released statement.
