
Seattle's upcoming graduates are in for a treat with a mix of Hollywood and city politics as commencement speakers take the stage at Climate Pledge Arena come June. Anna Faris, actress and author, is all set to impart wisdom to the undergraduate crowd, while the graduates will hear from their very own, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Seattle University announced.
Seattle University President Eduardo Peñalver highlighted the significance of both speakers stating, "We look forward to hearing from and honoring Ms. Faris and Mayor Harrell, two individuals whose lives and work align with Seattle University’s Jesuit educational mission" and he is certain that they will make the occasion memorable for graduates and their families alike, Mayor Bruce Harrell, who rose from a valedictorian at Garfield High School to holding Seattle's mayoral office, is notably the city’s first Asian American and biracial mayor on top of being its second Black mayor his insights on public safety, the homeless crisis, and fostering innovation are integral to his vision of 'One Seattle' where diversity is not just tolerated, but celebrated Faris, a Seattle native herself, brings a touch of star power and charitable spirit to the undergrad ceremony.
Faris, known for performances across genres from her comedic days in "Scary Movie" to dramatic roles in "Lost in Translation" and hit TV shows like "Mom," balances her acting prowess with a strong commitment to philanthropy. Alongside her creative work, she supports vital causes such as the Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth and is deeply involved with the Pacific Northwest Research Institute.
On the political front, Mayor Harrell has been actively addressing Seattle's challenges since his election in 2021, prioritizing innovation handling the city’s homelessness crisis and focusing on ensuring public safety for all Seattleites, his mayoral term has been noted for the principle of One Seattle, which aims to unite the city across its myriad differences but also, to recognize the common threads that bind its people, drawing from his experience as a Garfield High valedictorian and University of Washington alumnus where he also acquired a BA in political science and a juris doctor from the UW Law School, Harrell brings with him years of legislative experience having served on the Seattle City Council and as an interim mayor.
The ceremonies are expected to be a highlight for Seattle University this spring, as students look to these speakers — a blend of local influence and celebrity prestige — for guidance and inspiration. The undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies are scheduled for June 16th at Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena, marking what promises to be a particularly special moment for Seattle University's latest crop of scholars venturing forth.
