The Arizona Department of Public Safety is set to beef up its traffic enforcement and training initiatives thanks to a $440,000 grant from the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety. The grant, earmarked for the Fiscal Year 2025, aims to help reduce serious and fatal crashes across the state. According to a release by AZDPS, the funds will be dispatched across various traffic safety efforts, including DUI enforcement, occupant protection, and distracted driving.

The sizeable injection of cash will enable the department to not only continue but also to expand enforcement actions designed to make Arizona's roads safer. In their statement, AZDPS outlined that this grant would supplement existing programs like the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) training, enabling officers to better identify and investigate impaired drivers. Each initiative is getting a slice of the grant pie, with DUI enforcement nabbing the largest share at $120,000.

Here's how the grant funding breaks down: occupant protection enforcement is granted $35,000; street racing enforcement gets a $40,000 share; $150,000 goes to the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP); distracted driving enforcement takes $35,000; $20,000 is put aside for DRE training; and collision investigation gets a $40,000 boost. The allocation indicates a concerted effort to tackle a range of issues that lead to traffic incidents.

AZDPS' commitment to road safety seems uncompromising with this new funding. They are set to rigorously enforce laws aimed at saving lives on the tarmac. "The AZDPS is committed to enhancing roadway safety for all through consistent and proactive enforcement," the department said in the statement noted by the release. The grant is expected to support the integration of education and enforcement to effectively examine traffic safety challenges.
